چکیده

The long-term objective of our research is the visualization of the simulation of the behavior of realistic human beings, called synthetic actors, in a given environment, interactively decided by the animator. The ultimate reason for developing realistic-looking synthetic actors is to be able to use them in virtually any scene that recreates the real world. However, a virtual scene-beautiful though it may be-is not complete without people.... Virtual people, that is. Scenes involving synthetic actors imply many complex problems we have been solving for several years (Magnenat-Thalmann and Thalmann 1991). Behavioral techniques make possible the automating of high-level control of actors such as path planning. By changing the parameters ruling this automating, it is possible to give a different personality to each actor. This behavioral approach is a major step relatively to the conventional motion control techniques. Another complex objective is modeling human facial anatomy exactly, including movements to satisfy both structural and functional aspects of simulation. In order to improve the realism of synthetic actors, there are two important features to render: hair and clothes. Realistic hair has long been an unresolved problem because the great number of geometrical primitives involved and the potential diversity of the curvature of each strand of hair make it a formidable task to manage. Dressing synthetic actors with complex clothes is also a challenge. It is somewhat difficult

Virtual actors living in a real world

This paper presents techniques and tools for creating and animating virtual actors in real scenes. Several problems are explained: real objects hidden by virtual actors and virtual actors hidden by real objects, collision detection between the virtual actor and the real environment, correspondence between the real and the virtual cameras, casting shadows of the virtual actors on the real world....

Synthetic Actors in Real World Animating Virtual Actors in Real Environments

This paper tries to provide a detailed and complete description of merging virtual actors with animation in a real environment. It describes the tasks involved in each stage of integration such as the video acquisition, the extraction of camera parameters, the creation and animation of virtual actors, and the rendering of the final images. The most important problems are discussed: real objects...

Populating the Virtual Worlds with Interactive Perceptive Virtual Actors

Telepresence is the future of multimedia systems and will allow participants to share professional and private experiences, meetings, games, parties. The concepts of Distributed Virtual Environments are a key technology to implement this telepresence. Using Virtual Humans within the shared environment is a essential supporting tool for presence. Real-time realistic 3D avatars will be essential ...

Learning by Imitation of Behaviors for Autonomous Agents

The goal of this work is to provide more autonomy for virtual actors by endowing them with a learning ability by imitation. While acting in his virtual world, our virtual actor uses prototypic behaviors defined by Fuzzy Cognitive Maps (FCMs) to simulate other actors’ behavior in his imaginary world. This simulation allows him to carry out predictions and choices of strategies. We propose a meth...

Virtual actors and avatars in a flexible user-determined-scenario environment

VRaptor, a VR system for situational training that uses trainer-defined scenarios is described. The trainee is represented b y an avatar; the rest of the virtual world is populated b y virtual actors, which are under the control of trainer-defined scripts. The scripts allow reactive behaviors, but the trainer can control the overall scenario. This type of training system may be very useful in s...

A New Generation of Synthetic Actors: the Real-time and Interactive Perceptive Actors*

In this paper, we show the evolution from the earliest frame-by-frame synthetic actors to real-time perceptive actors living in distributed virtual environments or even in the real world. We first compare requirements and methods for frame-by-frame and real-time actors. Then, we introduce a new classification of synthetic actors with four categories: participants, guided actors, autonomous acto...
